Q: We built 12 backlinks to a page and it still won't rank. Are links overrated?
Short answer: links work, but only when on-page relevance is already there. A legal site had a service page with 12 decent referring domains stuck at position 11.
An audit showed the page barely covered the subtopics competitors did. Before buying more links, they rewrote it to cover 8 missing entities and added a clear FAQ section, no new backlinks.
Result in 6 weeks: position 11 to 3. The existing 12 links suddenly "counted" because the page now matched the query's expected coverage.
In practice: links amplify a relevant page; they can't rescue an incomplete one. Fix on-page first, then links do their job.
