Regex in Search Console is not for decoration. It helps you group messy queries and pages into questions you can actually answer: brand, intent, cannibalization, and template issues.
Use these 10 patterns:
• brand terms: brand1|brand2
• exact phrase with variants: (buy|best|cheap) widget
• excluded words: ^((?!free).)*$
• plurals and singulars: widget(s)?
• page folders: ^/blog/ or ^/category/
• product params: \?
• one topic, many modifiers: widget (review|guide|price)
• locations: (ny|texas|chicago)
• plural endings: guide(s)?|tool(s)?
• mixed intent: (how to|what is|why)
A few rules: anchor with ^ and $ when you need clean matches, use | for alternatives, and test every pattern on a small set before trusting the report. If a filter gets too broad, you stop reading the data and start guessing.
The best regex is the one that answers one question fast. Keep it narrow, name the intent, and reuse the same pattern across query and page reports.
