Manufacturer descriptions: how much duplication is too much?
'Q: I use the manufacturer's product description. Will duplicate content penalize me?'
Short answer: There's no penalty, but you won't outrank the 200 other stores using the identical text — that's the real cost.
The longer version: duplicate content across sites doesn't trigger a penalty. What it triggers is a filtering decision — Google picks one version to show and suppresses the rest. If you're a small store competing against marketplaces on the exact same spec sheet, you lose that pick every time.
You don't need to rewrite every product. Prioritize: your top 20% by margin or traffic potential get unique copy — real use cases, sizing notes, comparisons, FAQ. The long tail can keep manufacturer text plus a unique layer (your reviews, your Q&A, your shipping detail) so the page as a whole isn't a clone.
The follow-up: user reviews are the cheapest unique-content engine you have. A product with 30 genuine reviews is never 'duplicate' even on stock copy.
Rule of thumb: differentiate by margin, not alphabetically.
