Ranking in Google, invisible in Bing — and ChatGPT noticed
An AI-tools directory ranked fine in Google and assumed parity everywhere. Then referral data showed near-zero from Bing and a suspicious absence from ChatGPT citations. For an AI-tools site, that's the worst room to be missing from.
The investigation split the crawlers. Google renders JS aggressively; Bing's JS rendering is thinner and slower, and a chunk of AI answer engines lean on Bing's index or fetch HTML without executing much script. Their content was CSR-injected. Google ate it; Bing got a shell; AI engines citing Bing-adjacent data saw nothing to quote.
Turns out 'it works in Google' is a single-engine test in a multi-engine world. The tradeoff of heavy client rendering isn't visible until you check who else reads you — and increasingly, who else matters.
They server-rendered the tool descriptions and listings.
Bing impressions: near-zero → 40k/month in six weeks. ChatGPT and Perplexity began citing the directory within two months, +21% non-Google referral traffic. Render for the engine that doesn't render. SSR is how you stay quotable when JS isn't executed.
