Maximizing anchor diversity vs. maintaining topical coherence: a real tradeoff

Maximizing anchor diversity vs. maintaining topical coherence: a real tradeoff

The advice "diversify your anchors" can be pursued to a point where it harms topical relevance. The tension between distribution safety and relevance signal is real and under-discussed.

Maximal diversity — many unique, varied anchors — minimizes over-optimization risk by avoiding any repeated pattern. But if diversity is achieved by scattering anchors across unrelated terms, you dilute the topical coherence that tells Google what your page is about.

The competing tactic, topical coherence, keeps anchors semantically clustered around your subject (synonyms, related entities, long-tail variants of one theme), accepting slightly less raw diversity for stronger relevance signal.

On one hand, an extremely diverse but topically scattered profile is safe yet vague. On the other, a tightly coherent profile transmits relevance but risks reading as optimized if the coherence is too tight around the exact keyword.

Limitation: there is no public metric quantifying the optimal point on the diversity-coherence curve; it is inferred and niche-dependent.

My framing: pursue diversity of phrasing within coherence of topic. Vary the words, hold the theme. Diversity is a means to looking natural, not an end that should override relevance.

Open question: can topical-coherence and anchor-diversity be jointly optimized, or is there an unavoidable frontier between them?
