Kibana vs Grafana for log dashboards

Kibana vs Grafana for log dashboards

Two dashboarding giants, different center of gravity. Where each fits log work.

→ Kibana — built for Elasticsearch, so full-text log search and ad-hoc field exploration ("show me every 503 to Googlebot last Tuesday") is its home turf.
→ Grafana — shines at time-series metrics and alerting; with Loki behind it, it's lean for "crawl rate over time" panels and pages-per-hour, but weaker at deep free-text log digging.

⭐ Pick of the week: the architecture tip teams share — Loki+Grafana is far cheaper to run than full Elastic if your main need is graphs and alerts, not search.

Takeaway: Kibana when you interrogate log content directly; Grafana (with Loki) when you mostly chart crawl trends and alert on spikes.
