We compared two ranking interventions on 90 stalled pages (n=90, 60-day window).
— Adding 5 contextual internal links from high-authority pages: +1.8 median positions, ~$15 labor each
— Building 5 external links: +2.6 positions, ~$1,000+
External links move more, but internal links are nearly free and you control them fully — no outreach, no donor risk, instant deployment.
The ceiling is real: internal links only redistribute authority you already have; they can't create it.
Exhaust internal linking before you spend a dollar externally — it captures the cheapest 60% of the available lift.
