Playbook: the minimum tool stack for a brand-new site (and the order to add it)
I've set this up on several real new sites. Buying an all-in-one on day one is how you waste money. Add tools as you hit real walls.
The staged stack:
— Day 1, $0: Google Search Console + Google Analytics. Non-negotiable, free, irreplaceable.
— Day 1, $0: Bing Webmaster Tools (it bulk-imports from GSC and feeds AI search).
— Week 1, $0: Screaming Frog free tier (under 500 URLs) for your launch crawl.
— Month 2, cheap: ONE keyword tool — Mangools or Keysearch — once you're choosing topics weekly.
— Month 4+, only if needed: Ahrefs/Semrush when you genuinely need backlink + competitor data.
Mangools (early stage):
➕ Cheapest real keyword data, gentle learning curve
➖ Backlink/competitor depth is thin
Ahrefs/Semrush (later):
➕ Everything, eventually
➖ Overkill and overpriced for a 10-page site
Best for: months 1-3 → free + Mangools. Scaling → graduate to a big platform.
Price-vs-value: most new sites overspend by $100+/mo on tools they don't use yet.
Pick this if you're launching. Skip the all-in-one until you've hit a wall the free tools can't solve.
