Myth: "Get Lighthouse / PageSpeed to 100 and you'll outrank competitors"
Devs chase the green 100 like it's a ranking dial. I pushed a real page from 62 to 98 and rankings didn't budge.
Core Web Vitals are a tiebreaker, and only field data (CrUX) counts, not the lab score the tool shows you.
PageSpeed Insights:
➕ Lab diagnostics are great for finding what to fix
➖ The headline lab score isn't what Google ranks on
Field data (CrUX / Search Console CWV report):
➕ Real-user data Google actually uses
➖ Updates slowly, 28-day rolling
Best for: diagnosing render-blocking issues, the lab tool is perfect. Believing 100 = rankings, no, you just need to pass the field thresholds (LCP, INP, CLS), not max the score.
Price-vs-value: free tool, but the myth costs you days optimizing a vanity number.
Neutral.
Pick PageSpeed to find fixes. Skip the score-chasing, pass CWV in CrUX and move on.
