Reading a campaign's reaction in the first 48 hours

Reading a campaign's reaction in the first 48 hours
It was a Tuesday rollout when a beverage brand's bold new tagline went live — and the team resisted judging it by likes. They ran a reaction readout instead.

The turn was a structured pull at 48 hours. Step one: sentiment split — not just positive vs negative, but a third bucket: 'confused.' Step two: which exact phrase gets quoted most? Step three: is the conversation about the message or about the brand? Step four: are detractors customers or strangers?

The readout showed 31% confused — people misreading the pun. Sentiment was only 12% negative, but the confusion was killing recall. They added a clarifying second line in paid placements; confusion mentions fell by half in three days.

The takeaway: a campaign readout needs a 'confused' bucket, not just thumbs up or down. Misunderstanding looks like neutral in the data, but it quietly eats your message.
