How do I use breadcrumbs to actually help SEO, step by step?
'Q: I added breadcrumbs. Do they do anything beyond looking nice?'
Short answer: Yes — they pass internal links upward and can show your category path in the SERP, but only if marked up and consistent.
The longer version: Set them up right.
— Make breadcrumb items real crawlable links, not styled text — that's how they pass internal link value to categories.
— Add BreadcrumbList schema so Google can replace the URL with your path in results.
— Keep the path consistent with your actual site structure and canonical URLs; mismatched breadcrumbs confuse the hierarchy.
— Match the breadcrumb to how the user arrived where possible, but always include a primary, stable path for crawlers.
— Don't include the current page as a link to itself.
Example: a store's breadcrumbs were plain text; converting them to linked, schema-marked paths strengthened category pages and earned breadcrumb display in the SERP.
Rule of thumb: a breadcrumb that isn't a link is just decoration.
