FTC fake reviews: the line between honest affiliate content and a violation

Affiliate review sites are not safe just because they “recommend” products. If a review, rating, or testimonial is false, misleading, or not based on real experience, the FTC can treat it as deceptive advertising. That includes cherry-picked quotes, invented star scores, and “verified buyer” claims with no proof.

Three common failure points:
— Publishing testimonials that sound like real users but came from your own team or a paid source.
— Editing reviews so hard that the product looks better than the reviewer actually said.
— Labeling a page as independent while quietly steering every verdict to one offer.

For affiliate sites, the risk is not only the review text. It is the whole presentation: headlines, comparison tables, badges, “top pick” labels, and summaries. If your page implies hands-on testing, you need a real process behind it. If you did not test, do not imply that you did. If a testimonial was incentivized or filtered, disclose it clearly and keep the claim limited. 🛑

Best practice: document your review method, keep original notes, and make sure every endorsement reflects a real, supportable opinion. When in doubt, remove the claim rather than “soften” it. A clean review page can be less aggressive and still convert.
