The reporter's inbox was a graveyard; her LinkedIn was wide awake
We had a story and one busy tech journalist who clearly wasn't opening cold email. So we ran an experiment across a dozen targets: email for half, a short LinkedIn message for the other half, same pitch underneath.
The emails performed about as expected — a 9% reply rate, professional, easy to attach the full data pack. The channel reporters technically prefer, and technically ignore.
The LinkedIn messages converted at nearly triple that, but with a catch. They had to be shorter — three sentences, no attachments, just the hook and an offer to send the data. The platform forced brevity, and brevity is what got read on a phone between meetings. Two reporters who'd ghosted our email replied to the exact same pitch on LinkedIn within an hour.
"Email's where pitches go to die," one told us. "A DM I'll actually glance at."
Lesson: email is the universal, attachable, expected channel — and the most ignored. A LinkedIn or social DM cuts through precisely because it's scarcer and forces you to lead with the hook, no data dump to hide behind. Use email when the reporter is responsive and the materials are heavy. Use the DM when you're being ghosted and can fit the story in three lines.
