An unlinked mention of our client sat in a major outlet for three weeks before anyone noticed
There's a quiet rivalry between chasing fresh links and reclaiming the mentions you already earned. A wellness brand let me test which paid back faster.
The link-pitch motion was the usual grind: research targets, build an angle, send forty emails, win maybe three placements over a month. Honest work, slow conversion.
The mention-reclaim motion used a monitoring alert to find every place the brand was named without a link. In one week we found fourteen — a podcast show notes page, two roundups, a journalist's newsletter. We emailed each with a single warm line: 'Thanks for the mention — would you add a link so readers can find us?' Nine said yes within days. These were people who already liked the brand; we were only asking them to finish a sentence.
"Honestly I just forgot," one editor replied. "Fixed."
Lesson: cold link-building converts at single digits because you're starting from a stranger. Mention reclamation converts at half or better because the relationship and the editorial fit already exist — you're collecting a link that was almost given. Run reclamation first every month; it's the cheapest links you'll ever win. Then go cold for the rest.
