Q: We've accumulated dozens of monitors over years. How do I clean house?
A: Stale monitors are how you get paged for a service nobody runs anymore. Run this audit.
— List every monitor and tag each: critical, useful, or unknown. Anything 'unknown' is a red flag.
— Delete monitors for decommissioned services and dead URLs. Confirm in DNS first, don't guess.
— Check each one still asserts on real content, not just a 200 (old monitors drift).
— Verify ownership: every monitor needs a named owner. Orphans get deleted or adopted.
— Re-test notification routing. Channels and people change; alerts silently go nowhere.
Follow-up: the scariest finding is always the critical service that had NO monitor at all. Cross-check your monitor list against your actual service inventory, not just what's already monitored.
