Q: A new engineer is joining on-call. What's the monitoring onboarding checklist?
A: On-call without context is how 2am incidents go sideways. Hand over these eight things.
— A map of every monitor and what 'down' means for each (whole site vs one feature).
— Where alerts route, and how to acknowledge and silence them.
— The runbook link for the top 3 most common alerts.
— The escalation chain: who to wake, after how long.
— Read access to the status page and how to post an update.
— The list of known false-positive-prone monitors and why.
— Credentials/access to the host, CDN and DNS dashboards.
— A practice alert fired on purpose so they ack one before it's real.
Follow-up: shadow them on their first real page. Confidence comes from doing it once with backup.
