Yoast vs Rank Math vs raw header for index control
On WordPress, three ways to manage indexing. I've shipped all three.
Yoast and Rank Math both write meta robots per post/type with a clean UI; Rank Math also handles IndexNow natively and bulk index-status edits. Setting X-Robots-Tag at the server/header level beats both for non-HTML files (PDFs, images) where a meta tag can't live.
Pros (Rank Math): built-in IndexNow, bulk noindex by taxonomy, free tier generous.
Cons (Rank Math): feature sprawl, easy to misconfigure archives into noindex.
Pros (Yoast): conservative defaults, fewer footguns.
Cons (Yoast): IndexNow only via add-on, fewer bulk controls.
Pros (X-Robots-Tag): only way to noindex PDFs/non-HTML, server-wide rules.
Cons (header): needs server access, no UI, error-prone.
Best for: Rank Math for control freaks, Yoast for safe defaults, X-Robots-Tag for files. NOT for users who can't touch .htaccess/nginx. 4/5 Rank Math, 4/5 Yoast.
