Playbook: validate keyword difficulty before you trust the number

Playbook: validate keyword difficulty before you trust the number
I compared KD scores in Ahrefs, Semrush, and Mangools on the same 20 keywords. They disagreed by 30+ points. Here's how I decide what's actually winnable.

The validation steps:
— Ignore the raw KD number first. Open the live SERP for the keyword.
— Count referring domains to the top 5 results — that's the real bar, not the tool's score.
— Check if the top 5 are forums/Reddit/old pages — those signal a weak, beatable SERP regardless of KD.
— Look at YOUR domain's existing topical authority — easy KD in an unrelated topic is still hard for you.
— Only then read the tool KD as a tiebreaker between two similar options.

Ahrefs KD:
➕ Based on referring domains — most defensible model
➖ Conservative; flags easy terms as hard
Mangools KD:
➕ Cheap, decent for low-volume long tail
➖ Less reliable on competitive terms

Best for: serious difficulty calls → Ahrefs + manual SERP. Budget long-tail → Mangools.
Price-vs-value: Mangools is the value pick for solo bloggers; Ahrefs for anyone competitive.
Pick this if you keep targeting 'easy' keywords and not ranking. Skip the tool number — read the SERP.
