The reporter wanted a quote, and we had two mouths to offer her

For a climate-tech story, we could position our founder as the source, or arrange an independent academic to comment with our data underneath. Same study, two voices. We tried each on different reporters to see which travelled.

The founder quote was easy and fast — he was articulate, available, on-message. But two reporters quietly declined: "It's your product, so of course you'd say that." The voice carried a built-in discount.

The third-party route took longer. We briefed a university researcher, gave her the dataset, and let her draw her own conclusions — including one mildly unflattering to us, which we left in. Reporters trusted her precisely because she wasn't selling anything. Three covered the story with her as the named expert and our brand as the data source in the same sentence.

"An independent voice on vendor data is the combination I can actually run," one editor said.

Lesson: a founder quote is fast and free and reads as marketing. A third-party expert is slower to arrange and you cede control of the conclusion — but you buy credibility you can't manufacture. Use the founder for opinion and vision pieces. Borrow an outside voice the moment the story is about your own numbers.
