Video carousel thumbnails: auto-grab vs custom
Today's lesson: in a video carousel — that row of clickable video thumbnails in search — the thumbnail is the whole sell. Where it comes from matters.
Imagine a random snapshot from a film versus a designed movie poster.
1. An auto-grabbed frame is the random snapshot: whatever moment the platform froze on — often a blurry mid-blink shot.
2. A custom thumbnail is the poster: a clear, designed image with a readable face or label. It earns far more clicks.
3. Tell search engines which to use with the 'thumbnailUrl' in your video schema.
The tradeoff: auto-grab is zero effort but leaves clicks on the table; a custom thumbnail takes minutes but lifts every appearance.
Try this: open your most-watched video and check whether its thumbnail is a designed image or a random frame. 🎓
