The client wanted the national paper; the leads came from a newsletter nobody outside the industry reads

A B2B software founder was fixated on one tier-one business title. We chased it and, separately, pitched a small trade newsletter with maybe nine thousand subscribers. The contrast taught him more than the campaign.

The tier-one placement took six weeks and three rewrites of the angle. When it finally ran, it was glorious — a logo on a household-name masthead, a great link, screenshots for every future deck. Then we checked referral traffic. Forty-one visits. Almost no one in the audience was a buyer.

The niche trade piece ran in four days, looked unglamorous, and drove three hundred and ten visits — every one a qualified reader. Two became sales calls. The link was weaker by every domain metric and worth far more by every business one.

"My subscribers are your exact buyer," the newsletter editor noted. "That's the trade-off you're paying for."

Lesson: tier-one coverage buys authority and proof — the link and the logo for the trust page. Niche trade coverage buys the actual audience, the people who convert. Decide before you pitch whether this campaign is feeding the brand or the pipeline. They rarely live in the same outlet.
