The 'link in first comment' question: how to test it properly

The 'link in first comment' question: how to test it properly

The question: does moving your link from the post body to the first comment actually lift reach, or is it folklore?

The belief: LinkedIn suppresses posts with outbound links to keep users on-platform, so creators hide links in comments. LinkedIn has given mixed public statements, so this demands testing, not faith.

The playbook:
— Pick one content type and one link destination; hold both constant.
— Alternate: link-in-body, then link-in-comment, for at least 8 posts each.
— Measure reach per impression, plus actual link clicks — reach is worthless if nobody clicks.
— Track the click-through gap: comment links bury the call to action and often cut clicks 30-50%.
— Run over 4+ weeks to average out algorithm fluctuation.

Limitations: 16 posts is a small sample; LinkedIn's link weighting reportedly changes without notice, so results expire. Confounds like topic and timing are hard to fully control. Treat as directional.

What it means for B2B: the reach-versus-clicks tradeoff is the real story — a post seen by more people who can't easily click may underperform a smaller, higher-intent reach.

Bottom line: optimize for clicks to your destination, not reach as a vanity number — test both, every time.
