Keyword alerts vs. reading every query yourself
Many tools let you set "keyword alerts" — you pick words like "email marketing," and the tool only pings you when a query mentions them. The alternative is reading the full list yourself each day.
Here is the honest tradeoff:
1. Keyword alerts save time. You skip the scrolling and only see matches.
2. But alerts also miss things. A reporter might ask about "newsletter growth" — your perfect topic — without ever typing your exact keyword.
Think of it like a strainer. A fine strainer catches less junk but also blocks some good bits.
My beginner advice: in your first month, read the full list manually. You will learn which odd phrasings reporters use for your topic. Then build alerts that include those surprise words too.
Try this today: write down three different ways a journalist might describe what you do. Those are your future alert words.
