Big general database vs. small niche one

Big general database vs. small niche one

When you start, you will meet two kinds of tools for finding reporter requests (called "queries" — short questions journalists post asking for expert input).

1. The big general database — hundreds of queries a day across every topic: pets, finance, travel, software. Huge reach, but you scroll past 95% that don't fit you.
2. The small niche database — only your field, maybe ten queries a day. Tiny volume, but almost every one is relevant.

Think of it like fishing in the ocean vs. a stocked pond. The ocean has more fish, but the pond means fewer empty casts.

The tradeoff is your time. A general tool wins if you can skim fast and your topic is broad. A niche tool wins if your field is narrow and minutes are precious.

Try this today: time yourself skimming one batch of general queries. If it took over ten minutes to find one fit, a niche tool may serve you better.
