Controlling your snippet: meta description vs page text

Controlling your snippet: meta description vs page text

Today's lesson: the snippet — the gray description under your blue title in results — is what convinces people to click. You have two levers, and one you don't fully control.

Imagine writing your own intro card versus letting a host pick your best quote.

1. The meta description is your intro card: a 150-character summary you write in the page's code, suggesting what Google should show.
2. But Google often ignores it and pulls a sentence straight from your page text that better matches the search — the host's quote.
3. So write strong, self-contained sentences in your content, not just a good meta tag.

The tradeoff: the meta description is your suggestion; clear on-page sentences are your insurance when Google overrides it.

Try this: search one page and check — is the snippet your meta text, or a sentence Google grabbed? 🎓
