Optimizing for ratio vs. optimizing for velocity: which signal dominates?
Two over-optimization signals are routinely conflated: anchor distribution (the static ratio of exact-match to natural) and anchor velocity (the rate and clustering of new anchors over time). They are distinct, and tactically they pull in different directions.
A profile can have a textbook-natural ratio yet a suspicious velocity — say, 40 exact-match anchors appearing within one week, then nothing. Penguin-era analysis suggested temporal clustering of identical anchors was a strong manipulation fingerprint, arguably more so than the static ratio alone.
The tactic tension: when you must build keyword anchors, do you prioritize keeping the cumulative ratio in band, or smoothing the velocity so no spike appears?
On one hand, ratio is what most audit tools surface, so it dominates practitioner attention. On the other, velocity is harder to fake retroactively and may carry more weight precisely because it is harder to game.
Limitation: we cannot observe Google's actual weighting of velocity vs. ratio; both are inferred from pattern-correlation in penalized profiles, heavily confounded.
My working model: treat them as two gates. Pass both. A clean ratio with a spiky velocity is not safe.
Open question: does velocity sensitivity scale with domain authority, or is the spike threshold absolute?
