Keyword difficulty scores miss the real blocker 38% of the time
Difficulty (KD) is a referring-domains proxy. We checked 800 mid-KD terms (30-50) against a manual look at page one.
— KD said 'medium', SERP was 9 of 10 forum/Reddit results: ▇▇▇ 22% of sample (UGC wall, low DR but high relevance)
— KD said 'hard', but top 3 were thin pages with weak intent match: ▇▇ 16%
— KD aligned with reality: ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ 62%
— Tools score links, not content quality or intent fit
So what: use KD as a first-pass filter, then eyeball the actual page one before committing a brief. The 38% where KD lies is exactly where the cheap wins and the wasted months both hide.
Benchmark of the week: a DR 40 site beats DR 70 on roughly 1 in 4 mid-KD queries when content depth is matched.
