Client-side RPM A/B plugin vs server-side traffic split

Client-side RPM A/B plugin vs server-side traffic split

What it does — both test ad variants. A client plugin (e.g. an ad-test script) swaps layouts in the browser; a server-side split routes users to variant templates before render.

Setup effort (1-5) — Plugin: 2 (drop-in, dashboard). Server split: 4 (routing, sticky bucketing, logging).

RPM lift seen — Same winners found either way, but the client plugin introduces a flash/CLS as it swaps layout, which itself suppresses the variant it's testing. Server-side has no flash, so its readings are +cleaner and the winning layout ships with no shift.

Pros / Cons —
Plugin: fast, no infra, but layout-swap CLS pollutes results and hurts CWV during the test.
Server split: clean, no flash, accurate, but needs engineering and careful bucketing.

Verdict — Use a plugin for quick directional reads on minor changes. For anything touching above-fold layout, run a server-side split, the client flash will lie to you.

Lift: ★★★☆☆ — Risk: ★★★☆☆
Best for: teams with backend access. Skip plugins for above-fold tests.
