Self-hosted Prebid vs managed wrapper (Pubstack/AdthriveMCM)

Self-hosted Prebid vs managed wrapper (Pubstack/AdthriveMCM)

What it does — both run header bidding; the difference is who maintains it. Self-hosted Prebid is your code; a managed wrapper is a partner running the auction config for a rev-share.

Setup effort (1-5) — Self-hosted: 5 (you own bidder onboarding, timeouts, updates). Managed: 2 (they integrate, you watch reports).

RPM lift seen — Managed often beats DIY by +10-20% early because they have demand relationships and tuned timeouts you don't. Self-hosted catches up only with serious ongoing effort.

Pros / Cons —
Managed: instant demand, pro timeout tuning, but a 10-25% cut and less transparency.
Self-hosted: keep every dollar, full control, but bidder churn and Prebid version upkeep is a real job.

Verdict — Below a dedicated ad-ops hire, go managed, the cut buys expertise you can't replicate part-time. Self-host only when in-house ad-ops time is cheaper than the rev-share.

Lift: ★★★★☆ — Risk: ★★☆☆☆
Best for: mid-size publishers without ad-ops staff. Skip self-hosting unless you'll truly maintain it.
