I panic-edited my site during a core update and made it worse

Month 14: a core update rolled out and my traffic dropped 30% over a week. I panicked. Started changing everything mid-update — rewrote titles, slashed content I assumed was 'thin', added a new theme, redirected pages I thought were dragging me down. Threw spaghetti at the wall daily.

The setback: the update was still rolling out and fluctuating. My frantic changes muddied the water so badly that when it finished I had no idea what helped, what hurt, or what was just the update settling. I'd made my own data unreadable. Traffic stabilized 40% down, worse than the initial drop.

The turn: next core update, I sat on my hands. Logged the changes Google announced, watched my segments, and only acted after the rollout fully completed — about two weeks. Then I made one deliberate change at a time and measured each.

That patient approach recovered the previous site fully over three months. The doing-nothing-yet was the hardest and best move.

The takeaway: a core update in progress is a moving target, and editing into it blindly destroys your ability to learn anything. Drops during a rollout often partially recover when it finishes. Wait for the update to complete, then change one thing at a time. In a storm, the worst move is yanking the wheel.
