Single hook vs double hook (the stacked open)
A creator used one clean hook per video: "This is the worst money advice on the internet." Three-second retention: 58% — solid, but it dipped hard at second five once the curiosity was half-satisfied.
And then we stacked a second hook right behind the first. Line one set it up, then at second four came "...and a financial advisor told it to me to my face." A fresh hook before the first one faded. Five-second retention went from 49% to 68%.
Here's the tradeoff with double hooks — they hold the early cliff but they're exhausting to write and easy to overstuff. Stack three and it feels like a slot machine, and trust drains.
The result across the channel: two stacked hooks beat single hooks specifically at the five-second drop, the deadliest point on short form.
The lesson: one hook gets them in, a second hook at the first dip keeps them. Two is the sweet spot, three is a tell.
