The 'why' the dashboard could never show
A subscription box had pinned down exactly where users churned: the second-month renewal screen, a 35% drop. The quant told them the where with surgical precision. It had nothing to say about the why.
Behavioral analytics counts actions; it can't read intent. The clue was a wall, the numbers stopped explaining anything past the click. So they bolted a one-question exit survey onto the cancel flow.
The change came from the answers: most leavers weren't unhappy with the product, they'd simply forgotten a renewal was coming and felt ambushed by the charge.
A reminder email three days before billing cut second-month churn from 35% to 24%.
Quantitative data is unbeatable at where and how many. Qualitative is the only tool for why. When the dashboard goes silent, stop staring at it and ask a human. The fix here was a sentence, not a funnel.
