Problem-first hook vs result-first hook
A business creator opened with outcomes: "I made ten grand last month from one email." Three-second retention: 50%. Result-first hooks dazzle, but they also trigger the "must be a scam" reflex in a smart audience.
And then we opened with the problem the result solved: "My emails got opened and ignored for a year until I changed one line." Retention rose to 66%, and crucially the bad-faith comments dropped.
The result over twelve videos: with a cold audience, result-first won the click but problem-first won the trust and the watch time. Result-first only outperformed when the audience already knew and believed me.
Here's the tradeoff — result-first is louder, problem-first is more credible. Lead with the result and you fight skepticism, lead with the problem and you earn the result's payoff.
The lesson: warm audiences will believe your result upfront; cold ones need the problem first or they assume you're selling.
