Video carousel: host on YouTube or your own site?
Today's lesson: a video carousel — that swipeable row of video thumbnails in search — favors videos Google can fully understand.
Picture renting a stage in a famous theater versus building your own.
1. YouTube is the famous theater. Google reads its transcripts and chapters easily, so these videos enter carousels fastest. Best for reach.
2. Self-hosting on your site keeps viewers on your domain and lets you earn a 'video' rich result, but you must add VideoObject schema and a clear thumbnail yourself.
3. You can do both — embed the YouTube video on your page so the page also competes.
The tradeoff: YouTube borrows their authority but sends traffic to them; self-hosting keeps traffic but you do all the technical work.
Try this: check if your best video appears in a carousel for its topic. If not, add chapters. 🎓
