Using the Removals tool to "deindex" permanently

GSC's Removals tool is a fire alarm, not a fix. People use it to take a page out of search and assume it's gone for good. It isn't — the block expires after about 6 months, and the page reappears in results if you never addressed the underlying directive.

What it does well:
— Hides a URL from Google results in hours — perfect for emergencies (leaked PII, accidental publish)
— Buys time while you implement a real fix

Where it falls short:
— Temporary by design — roughly 180 days, then it's back
— Hides from results but doesn't remove from the index

The fix: pair every removal with a permanent signal. For gone-forever content, return 410 (or 404); to keep-but-hide, apply noindex and let Google recrawl. The Removals tool buys ~6 months — use that window to make the real change, then verify with URL Inspection.

Best for: urgent, temporary hiding.
Not for: permanent removal — that needs 410 or noindex behind it.
