Mistake: publishing pages with no path to them

Mistake: publishing pages with no path to them

You launch 500 new product pages, drop them in the sitemap, and wait. Weeks later half are still unindexed. "Crawl budget," you mutter.

No. They're orphans. Nothing on your site links to them. A sitemap is a suggestion, not a road — Googlebot strongly prefers crawling links it finds while traversing your pages. An orphan page with one sitemap mention and zero internal links is a low-priority crawl at best.

The fix isn't more sitemap pings. It's internal links. Put those pages into category lists, related-product modules, breadcrumbs. Give Googlebot a reason to walk there.

Google's crawl demand is driven by perceived importance, and importance is signaled by links.

A page nobody links to is a page Google quietly deprioritizes. Wire it in.
