Optimizing for AI Overviews vs classic rich results — different playbook?
'Q: Should I optimize product pages for Google's AI answers or stick to rich snippets?'
Short answer: Same foundation, different emphasis — rich results need clean Product schema; AI Overviews reward structured, quotable comparison content answering buyer questions.
The longer version: For rich results, the lever is technical: valid Product, Offer, and AggregateRating JSON-LD so Google can render stars and price. That hasn't changed.
AI Overviews pull from content that answers, not just lists. They favor pages with explicit specs in tables, clear 'X vs Y' framing, and concise answers to 'which is best for…' For e-com that means buying guides and comparison blocks on category pages, plus FAQ schema addressing real purchase questions — the stuff an AI can lift and cite.
Example: Product schema keeps your stars in blue links; a 'standing desk buying guide' with a spec table and FAQ is what gets pulled into an AI Overview for 'best standing desk for small spaces.'
Rule of thumb: Schema earns the snippet, answerable structured content earns the AI citation. Do both.
