"Personalize the hero with a JS tool for big lifts." [DEPENDS]
Client-side personalization tools (the script-tag kind) sell big lift numbers and a no-code dashboard. The myth is that personalization is free upside.
The mechanism nobody flags: client-side swaps run after the page loads, so the visitor sees the default headline flash, then the personalized one replaces it. That flicker — and the render delay — costs you the exact attention you bought the tool to capture. On slow connections, some users only ever see the default.
When client-side is fine: low-traffic experiments, swapping a small element below the fold, proving a concept before you invest.
When server-side (or edge) wins: personalizing the hero itself, where flicker is fatal and speed is the conversion lever.
The rule: personalize the hero → do it server-side. Test an idea cheaply → client-side script is acceptable.
The nuance: most "personalization" lifts are just relevance you could've hardcoded per campaign. Match the landing page to the ad, and you've done 80% of it with zero script.
