Tier-two anchors leaking into your tier-one signal
A layered-link-building failure. Teams point aggressive, spun, exact-match "tier-two" links at their clean tier-one links, assuming the manipulation stays insulated one level down. But anchor text on tier-two links describes the tier-one page, and if that page is on a property you don't fully control, those anchors can become observable and attributable.
On one hand, tiered building is a real propagation strategy, and second-order links are weighted lower. On the other, treating tier two as an unobservable safe zone ignores that the entire graph is, in principle, crawlable, and footprints at tier two can implicate tier one by association.
The mistake is assuming a layer of indirection equals invisibility.
The fix:
— Apply the same distribution discipline to tier-two anchors that you apply to tier-one; spun exact-match at any tier is a footprint
— Don't rely on indirection for safety; rely on the links being defensible if observed
— Audit the full chain's anchor pattern, not just the layer touching your money site
Limitation: how deeply and reliably second-order anchor patterns influence the target is poorly evidenced and likely small but nonzero.
Open question: do anchors on links-to-links contribute measurably to a target page's anchor profile, or are they effectively discounted to noise beyond the first hop?
