The CEO quote that got cut from every story
A logistics company landed five placements off a funding round. The founder was furious about one thing: his quote appeared in zero of them. He'd given a polished line — "We're thrilled to continue our journey of empowering customers through innovation." Every editor deleted it.
That quote said nothing a reader could use. It had no claim, no number, no opinion anyone could disagree with. Editors cut quotes that don't advance the story, and "thrilled to continue our journey" advances nothing.
We coached a different style: quotes that take a position, name a tension, or reveal a decision. Not "we're excited about growth" but "we turned down two bigger offers because they'd have forced us to raise prices on small shippers." Specific, slightly risky, genuinely his.
Next announcement, the founder's quote led with a real strategic tradeoff. It survived into 4 of 6 stories, and one outlet built its headline around it — "Why this CEO rejected a bigger raise."
Lesson: editors don't cut quotes for being too bold, they cut them for being empty. A quote that no one could possibly disagree with is a quote no one will ever print.
