Case #019: The campaign I had no idea how to judge
I launched a $40-payout insurance lead offer at $100/day and watched the dashboard like a slot machine. Some days felt good, some bad. I scaled on the good feelings, pulled back on the bad ones, and after two weeks I was somehow down. $1,800 spent, $1,500 back. A 17% loss accumulated through pure vibes.
The rot was that I'd never once calculated my breakeven. I didn't know my breakeven CPA, my breakeven CTR, or how many leads per $100 I needed to profit. So I had no fixed line to judge any day against. Every decision was emotional because I'd given myself no number to be rational with. "Good day" meant nothing without knowing what good required.
The fix is the most boring habit I have now and the most valuable: before launching anything, I write three numbers on paper — breakeven CPA, breakeven conversion rate, and conversions-needed-per-day-to-profit. Every later decision gets measured against those three, not against my mood.
I recalculated: at $40 payout and a true breakeven CPA of $26, I needed my CPA under $26 or I was dead. I cut everything above it ruthlessly. $1,600 spent, $2,400 back. 50% ROI, driven by a line on a page instead of a feeling in my gut.
— The lesson: without a breakeven number written down before launch, you're not optimizing — you're gambling with a dashboard for a slot machine.
