A high-volume term with a packed SERP can return near-zero clicks
Volume is impressions, not available clicks. Across 1,600 queries we measured the click-through curve after SERP features:
— No features, position 1 click share ▇▇▇▇▇ 39%
— With featured snippet, position 1 ▇▇▇ 23%
— With AI overview + 'people also ask' ▇▇ 13%
— Terms where features cut organic clicks by half ▇▇▇ 31%
You can win the rank and still lose the traffic.
The mistake: scoring a term on raw volume while a snippet, pack, or overview eats the clicks.
The fix: discount volume by an estimated click-through curve per SERP layout before you prioritize.
Benchmark of the week: rich SERP features cut position-1 click share from 39% to as low as 13%.
