A longer author bio vs. external corroboration of the author

The question: to strengthen an author signal, do you expand the on-site bio (credentials, history, links) or invest in making that author verifiable off-site?

This is the on-page-claim-versus-external-evidence distinction applied to people. The bio is the publisher's self-assertion; corroboration is the independent confirmation the QRG instructs raters to seek. The guidelines are clear that reputation is researched outside the site, which structurally subordinates the bio to its external footprint.

A longer bio has diminishing returns fast. Beyond establishing relevant expertise and offering verification paths (a real LinkedIn, published work, an institutional page), additional length adds little and can read as padding. The marginal corroborating signal — the author quoted in a trade outlet, listed on a conference, cited by a peer — is worth more than another paragraph of self-description.

The efficient sequence: make the bio accurate and verifiable, then spend effort building the off-site presence the bio points to.

Caveat: for an author with genuinely no external footprint, neither lever creates authority from nothing; the bio can only describe expertise that exists, and corroboration can only confirm a reputation that has been earned. Neither manufactures it.

What we still don't know: whether systems weight the structured facts in a bio at all when an author has no independent web presence to anchor them to.
