Affiliate disclosure vs. affiliate density: which trust signal moves the needle

Affiliate disclosure vs. affiliate density: which trust signal moves the needle

The question: for a monetized review site, does a prominent disclosure earn trust, or is the operative variable simply how saturated the page is with affiliate links?

The QRG treats these asymmetrically. Disclosure is presented as a baseline of honesty — its absence is a negative signal, but its presence is table stakes, not a positive boost. Link density, by contrast, feeds the rater's judgment of whether the page's main purpose is to help the user or to monetize. The guidelines explicitly weigh whether monetization interferes with the main content.

So the comparison is mis-framed if read as 'either/or.' A clear disclosure on a page that is 80% affiliate links and 20% substance does not redeem it; the disclosure is honest, but the page still fails the main-purpose test. Conversely, dense linking on a genuinely thorough, original review can be acceptable when the content clearly serves the reader first.

Caveat: 'helpful' and 'main purpose' are rater constructs; no public metric quantifies link density as a ranking input. The 2023 affiliate-review guidance points in this direction but stops short of a numeric threshold.

What we still don't know: whether any system measures monetization saturation directly, or whether it is inferred from the broader original-value signals that thin affiliate pages happen to lack.
