Broadcast vs segmented messaging: the relevance-vs-effort trade
Every announcement is a choice: blast everyone, or send to a slice.
Broadcast:
☐ Use for genuinely universal news (launch, downtime, big change).
☐ Strength: one message, full reach, zero setup.
☐ Weakness: irrelevant to most, trains members to mute you.
Segmented:
☐ Use when the message applies to a subset (new members, top contributors, a topic group).
☐ Strength: high relevance, high open rate, protects the channel from noise.
☐ Weakness: requires you to actually have segments built and tagged.
The tradeoff: broadcast is cheap now, expensive later (mutes compound). Segmenting costs setup but keeps your reach alive.
The rule of thumb: if under 70% of members would care, segment it. Build three durable segments first — new, active, dormant — and most messages route themselves.
Mute rate is your warning metric. Watch it.
Save this for your next launch.
