Verification gates vs. open join: the friction-versus-quality curve

Verification gates vs. open join: the friction-versus-quality curve

Should a new member clear a captcha/rules-react/quiz gate before seeing the server, or land straight in?

What the data shows
Verification gates measurably cut raid damage and bot floods — that's not in dispute. The cost is a join-funnel leak: each gate step sheds real humans too. In flows I've measured, a single rules-react gate drops 10-25% of genuine arrivals before first message; multi-step quizzes can shed half.

Why it happens
Gates can't distinguish a bot from a lazy human — both bounce at friction. You're applying a tax that bad actors pay in compute and good actors pay in patience, and the impatient good actors are exactly the marginal members you most wanted to convert.

The caveat
The drop-off is heavily confounded by intent: many who bounce at a one-click gate were low-intent anyway and would have lurked-then-left. A gate may be filtering, not losing, them.

Comparison: gate hard only when under active raid pressure or running a high-value/paid community where a wrong member is costly. Stay open when growth and cold-start density matter more than the occasional spammer.

Open question: is the right gate adaptive — invisible when calm, strict only when raid signals spike — and does anyone's tooling actually do that well?
