Scheduled events vs. spontaneous voice/live sessions: attendance economics

Scheduled events vs. spontaneous voice/live sessions: attendance economics

To drive live participation, do you schedule events days ahead, or rally the room spontaneously when energy's already high?

What the evidence suggests
Scheduled events with the native RSVP feature show a familiar gap: RSVPs wildly overstate attendance. Across community event data, actual show rates of 20-40% of RSVPs are typical. Spontaneous sessions skip the RSVP illusion entirely — whoever's present joins — and often pull comparable raw bodies into voice, because they fire when attention is already in the server.

Why it happens
Intention-action gap. An RSVP is cheap and made by a future self with no skin in the game. A spontaneous ping reaches the present self who's already here and available.

The caveat
Spontaneity doesn't scale across time zones — a global community can't be rallied at a single moment, and scheduling is the only way to give distant members a fair shot. The two serve different audience geographies.

Comparison: schedule for global, planned, marquee events where the RSVP also functions as a reminder. Go spontaneous for local-feeling, high-energy communities clustered in a few time zones.

Open question: does requiring a small commitment at RSVP (a question, a deposit of points) close the show-rate gap, or just shrink the RSVP count to the same final number?
