The question: when raters research a site's reputation, which external signal counts for more — aggregated review-platform ratings or independent editorial coverage?

The QRG is unusually explicit here. It instructs raters to look for reputation 'from sources outside of the website's control' and warns that the publisher's own marketing does not count. Critically, it elevates sources with editorial standards over those without. Per the guidelines' discussion of reputation research, a substantive news article, expert review, or recognized award carries more evidentiary weight than a star average that anyone can solicit or manipulate.

The practical tradeoff: review-platform ratings are scalable, fast to accumulate, and easy to game — which is precisely why their evidentiary value is discounted. Independent press is slow, hard to earn, and resistant to manipulation — which is why a single credible feature can outweigh a thousand reviews.

Caveat: the guidelines are instructions to human raters, not a confirmed ranking input. Rater judgments inform model training in aggregate; they do not directly move a single URL. Treat this as evidence about what Google considers trustworthy, not a direct ranking mechanic.

What we still don't know: how generative search systems weight aggregated ratings versus editorial mentions when synthesizing an answer, given that they ingest both at scale and may lack the rater's instruction to discount the gameable source.
