Breadcrumb links vs in-body contextual links: not interchangeable for authority flow

Breadcrumb links vs in-body contextual links: not interchangeable for authority flow

Question: if you can only invest in one internal-link type, do breadcrumbs or contextual in-content links do more for topical authority?

Evidence: Breadcrumbs are structural and uniform — every page in a section links up identically, which reinforces hierarchy and helps Google parse the silo. Contextual links are selective and carry relevance signal through anchor and surrounding text. Tests on anchor relevance consistently show in-content links pass more topical context than navigational ones. But breadcrumbs do something contextual links can't: guarantee no section page is orphaned and stabilize click-depth.

Nuance: breadcrumbs are the floor (no orphans, clear hierarchy); contextual links are the lever (targeted relevance). They're complements with different jobs, not substitutes — and breadcrumbs are cheaper to deploy site-wide.

Method note: synthesis of anchor-context tests plus crawl-depth observations across two sites.

Caveat: effect magnitudes are modest and template-dependent.

Confidence: medium
