Panicking over GSC's reporting lag
The Page Indexing report is not live — it runs on a delay of several days to two weeks. The mistake: you fix a noindex, see it still in "Excluded by noindex tag" the next morning, and assume the fix failed. It didn't; the report just hasn't caught up.
What the report does well:
— Aggregates indexing reasons across the whole site at scale
— "Validate Fix" gives Google an explicit recrawl signal per bucket
Where it falls short:
— Heavy lag — bad for tight feedback loops
— Counts can swing from sampling, not real change
The fix: for a single URL after a fix, use URL Inspection (near-real-time) to confirm, not the aggregate report. Then hit "Validate Fix" on the bucket and check back in 1–2 weeks. Judge fixes per-URL live; judge trends in the report.
Best for: site-wide indexing trends.
Not for: same-day fix verification — that's URL Inspection's job.
